the spirit booksThe Spirit Books merge my response to the mystery and miracle of nature with the long-standing tradition of books as testaments of faith and belief. Working with handmade papers, natural materials, beads, and stitching, I create contemplative objects that straddle the boundary between sculpture and book. The Spirit Books remind us of what is at stake in today’s world. Acknowledging the strength and the fragility of nature, they are both celebration and elegy.

installationsI love bringing words and calligraphy into new environments. In this ever faster moving world, the installations offer an opportunity to slow down and read the words of both famous writers and every day citizens in a special setting. The installations are done on site and in some situations, live before an audience. I have worked in historic houses and museums as well as galleries.

words for our timeWords For Our Time was created in response to the 2016 election. Words have always been my ballast and my anchor. I believe in their power. While I understand the saying “actions speak louder than words,” I believe that words can be where actions start. Throughout history, words have provided the spark to begin change and the sustenance to carry it through. Each piece was made from one large sheet of paper that was torn into separate sections. After the writing was complete, the pieces were sewn back together in an act of healing as the torn paper was mended and made whole.

the wondrous nearer drew: inspired by the poetry of emily dickinsonThe Wondrous Nearer Drew is a series of 30 kaleidoscopic images created from photographs of flowers and hand-lettered lines from the poems of Emily Dickinson. They celebrate the underlying mystery and spirit of flowers and the beauty, freshness, and crystalline ambiguity of Dickinson's language. The flowers were found in gardens and meadows and along roadsides. All are from Emily Dickinson’s home state of Massachusetts.
