safety is another word...
Anne's poem was written as part of the Lowell Growing Safer Project (LGS). Workshops used creative writing and conversation to encourage community members (most of whom were women or girls) to share their experiences and explore assumptions related to gender, safety and class. Using spontaneous or “rough” writing, participants completed the sentence, Safety is another word for . . . . A discussion of what safety meant to us and ways that we might make our community and ourselves feel and be safer followed. Seven workshops were conducted in Lowell, and another at a conference in England.
Although the Lowell Growing Safer Project and workshops were completed 20 years ago, they seem more relevant today than they did then. Writings from the workshops were published in Safety is . . . : Creative Writings from Lowell, MA edited by Anne Mulvey and Krista Nadir (Grow Press, 1998). The press was a short-lived initiative designed to “Give Real Opportunity to Women.”
