WHO?
Any group of readers, artists, enthusiasts (already in existence or assembled for this) who would like to read my books and meet with me on Zoom to talk about them.
WHAT?
A zoom conversation with the group.
WHERE?
In the comfort of your own home.
WHEN?
At a time convenient for all of us.
HOW?
A designated person from the group purchases 10 or more copies of one of my books in the bookstore and then emails me the addresses of the recipients. I send the books and we schedule a time in the future for a Zoom meeting. You read the book and we talk! You have to buy 10 copies but you do not have to have 10 people in your group. You can even buy 10 books for gifts and schedule a one-on-one Zoom meeting with me.
WHY?
Because I miss connecting with people at talks and presentations and because I want to get copies of my books into as many hands as possible. They are all labors of love. Books Include: Art Lessons: Reflections From An Artist's Life, The Spirit Books, Calligraphy: How I Fell In, Out, And In Love Again, Words For Our Time, Handmade Books For A Healthy Planet. Visit the Bookstore to learn more.

Information About My In-Person Presentations For When That Time Comes Again
calligraphy: How I fell in, out, and in love again talk
This illustrated talk to based on my memoir of the same name. It chronicles my sometimes all-consuming, always challenging, and ultimately freeing relationship with calligraphy over forty years. This wide-ranging talk introduces the basic principles of calligraphy, shares lessons about the art process and letting go of the desire for perfection, and illustrates the artistic possibilities of a love of words and letters. It is about more than how to hold a pen and form letters. It is about questioning and slowly finding answers—inspiring for artists and non-artists alike.

introduction to italic calligraphy and handwriting workshop
Writing Calligraphy: How I Fell In, Out, and In Love Again put me in touch with my earliest days of learning calligraphy—before I had ambitions (for getting good, for doing work for others and making money, for exhibiting). They were days of peaceful concentration when I was completely engaged and completely in the moment. This workshop is about sharing those beginning steps.
This brief introduction to calligraphy emphasizes process rather than product. Mary Oliver wrote, “To pay attention/ This is our endless proper work.” We will focus on paying attention while we explore the basics of Italic calligraphy and handwriting with an edged pen. The goal is to give you a foundation from which to continue on your own. Basic Workshop: 1.5-2 hours Extended Workshop: 5 hours All materials (markers, handouts, and paper) are provided for an additional fee. Click here to see the page given to participants for continued work at home. It includes handouts and links to online instruction and resources. |
beauty & the book: celebrating books through history and contemporary art talk
This illustrated talk is for all those who love holding books in their hands and turning the pages. It celebrates the vessel as well as its contents. If you think books are only made of paper, you are in for a surprise. You’ll see books from around the world made from palm leaves, wood, silk, and vellum that are rolled, folded, and strung as well as sewn followed by some amazing work by contemporary artists. You’ll have a chance to view and handle books from my collection. I have been involved with the book for over 30 years as an artist, writer, illustrator, designer, publisher, and reader and loves sharing her passion.
"Susan's talk at the Boxford Library was a fascinating account of books throughout times and cultures. Not only did the illustrated presentation show images of a wide variety of books, she also brought in many examples that audience members were able to handle. She is a warm and professional speaker who is happy to share her knowledge. I hope to have her back again and highly recommend her for other libraries."
